Navigating through the endless maze that is the interwebs, I came across an interesting question directed towards teachers. "How much time outside of the classroom do you spend on preparation?"
I laughed. It was as if someone asked how many hours I spent breathing outside of a classroom. It seemed a ridiculous question. As a music teacher, I have spent countless hours outside of my little studio room arranging songs, writing scale sheets and arpeggio exercises, and even learning new instruments to be sure my students could learn anything of their hearts' desire. For my brother's birthday (September 29th - if you want to send presents) we decided to treat him to his favorite things. Robots, CNC- machines and Faires. Thus, began our trip to Maker Faire: NY 2012. Last year, we all took public transit and slept fitfully in cramped Bus seats in a four hour ride from Massachusetts to New York. So, my student and I were discussing how music was math. Then I came across this.
The musical sequencing that goes with these mathematical drawings is pretty amazing.
Music has been part of what it means to be human since time immemorial. Cave paintings depict people playing and dancing with animals and the discovery of a bone flute puts music even further into the Paleolithic times. Whether it is a baby’s first lullaby or Amazing Grace as we are laid to rest, music is a part of every culture and every child.
